First an FYI. There was some sort of snafu with my free book signups, it wasn’t signing people up. I have no idea what happened, as I didn’t change anything, but let’s all thank Caroline for making me aware of the issue so that I could fix it. The fix ended up being moving my business to another company. Anyway, the signup is working now.
There’s a new movement in punk, called solarpunk. It envisions a hopeful future, makes use of solar and other renewable energies, tackles some of our current burdensome problems (in reality), and likes to make use of art nouveau.
Earlier this summer, when I was floundering, I thought perhaps writing something completely new and different would help get me back into gear. That’s when I stumbled across a call for stories involving solarpunk dragons. Optimism was hard for me to come by at the moment, yet I went for the challenge.
I wrote a story called “Wings of the Guiding Suns”. Yes, it’s about dragons in the future and makes use of another popular theme in science fiction lately, the new ice age. Of course, my dragons are from space, I believe ancient alien theorists agree that they do, and they come to Earth on a mission to guide us to a new home.
It was accepted for publication by Incandescent Phoenix Books and will appear in their Wings of Renewal anthology. Coming this October!
The future is vibrant, hopeful, and filled with dragons.
In WINGS OF RENEWAL, twenty-two authors explore the exciting new subgenre of solarpunk through the lens of these majestic creatures. Whether they irrigate dry terrain or serve as spaceships, are mythic beasts come to life or biomechanical creations of man, these dragons show us a world where renewable energy overcomes gas and oil, and cooperation replaces competition.
If you love fantasy/sci-fi fusion, this is an anthology you do not want to miss! So hop on solar wings and follow us into futures that–for all their witches and dragons–are far more possible than they might seem.

Meet Lady Kemla!
Cassandra Webb is a chocaholic writer from the small coastal village of Narooma, Australia. Writer of children’s and young adult fiction, fantasy and picture books. Cassandra also enjoys writing creative non-fiction. She grew up in rural and remote Australia and remembers riding horses, working with helicopters and being homeschooled. Now on the coast with her three children she enjoys the beaches in summer and the nearby snowy mountains in winter.
Her favourite desert is a huge bowl of chocolate custard, smothered in whipped cream, from a can, and topped with chocolate ice-magic. Mmm. Yum. LEARN MORE
To the south of the Aquila Realm border, two strange things are happening.
The first is that the youngest and most acclaimed mage in the land has gone undercover, and he begins his journey in Summers Realm. The realm where magic itself is outlawed.
The second is that a ruthless band of slave traders have taken hire of more men than they require in a soon to be failed attempt to capture more slaves than ever before.
These things are strange, but probably unexceptional if they weren’t to intersect with the otherwise hidden life of a young lady by the name of Kemla.
These events will change her life forever.
