What? Am I serious? A battle over who has the largest fungus? It’s true.
The largest single living organism on Earth is a fungus.
The first claim to this distinction happened in Crystal Falls, Michigan. They won’t let go. They even have a Humongous Fungus festival every year to celebrate its existence. It covers 38 acres near the Wisconsin border and is believed to be 1500 – 10,000 years old. You can learn more about Michigan’s Humongous Fungus HERE.
Then a larger specimen was discovered in Washington State, which was dethroned shortly thereafter by another found right here in Oregon. It covers over 3 square miles and is at least 2400 years old. It’s in the Malheur National Forest in the Strawberry Mountains.
You can bet I’ll get out to see it one of these years. How can I resist? If you know me at all, you know I can’t.
However, it’s not one giant mushroom. Honestly, I was disappointed to find out it’s not. It’s a bunch of normal sized mushroom caps linked underground. The underground connection makes it a single organism.
Mushroom caps bloom in the fall, so there’s no point in trying to see any fungus, humongous or not, in another season.
I did a lot of research to discover the Humongous Fungus [in Michigan and Oregon] is edible. It’s a close relative to the common button mushroom.
Michigan isn’t thrilled and isn’t giving up its title of having the most Humongous Fungus.
Yes, a raging battle over fungus. Awesome. How’d I run into this little gem? While researching Eastern Oregon for the second book in the Rifter series, The Initiate.

Two Bulls Fire
In case you don’t follow me on either FB or Twitter, then you missed the excitement of my town being on fire. Not that it’s exciting. It’s not.
I was happily minding my own business watching the Belmont Stakes [no Triple Crown winner, btw, very disappointing] when a ‘Breaking News’ strip started across the bottom of the TV: Two fires have broken out 6 miles northwest of Bend.
What? Six miles is like in the house in the west. I peek northwest and see nothing but blue skies. Then I look directly west. :-O
Several friends were put on evacuation alerts, our water supply was threatened, and at times the fire was rather frightening… waking up at 3 a.m. from the stink of smoke and sky glowing orange in the west.
But the firefighters did a great job and our town was saved from a potential disaster. Thank you firepeople!
And a big reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the tool who started these two fires and a third in the same area the following Monday afternoon. Arson is highly suspected.
