The west coast of the US is trying to spontaneous combust… If you don’t see me on Twitter later this week, it means I melted. I tried to melt on an outing on Saturday, but found a bit of shade under a juniper. So was able to stay in a solid state.
We’re in the mid 90’s the next couple of days. Boo! I’m sure most of you know, I don’t like heat. I don’t like it at all. Normally it’s still cool in these parts this time of year. What I mean by that is, it’s not warm enough for summer clothes until mid July normally. We rarely put the A/C unit in before mid July. Then we only have to endure about six weeks.
I’ll do my best to not leave my ice cave here…
So that meant no thermals were needed on Friday night. I never used my mittens. Wore a mere fleece. About 11:30 I felt cold enough to put on my winter coat, but I didn’t zip it.
The moon didn’t rise until 12:30, so theoretically we had a nice, dark sky. Unfortunately, TPTB arranged some publicity with photography that drove us all nuts. Guests included. It ruined what should have been a great, relaxing night under the stars.
Zumi now called Zumba was still out of commission. I had anticipated that and brought up my trusty, dependable Orson Bradbury. I hadn’t used him since last October. The telrad was still lined up. The mirrors were in perfect alignment… Zumba, that is how a telescope is supposed to behave. Take lessons.
Anyway, Venus was up in the evening. Big and bright. A bit low, so this shot was taken through the trees.
We also looked at Saturn and all the usual objects, especially once the photographer dude removed himself from three feet in front of my telescope. I saw everything through my trusty 8″ I’d seen through the 10″ s. Thank you for being so awesome Orson Bradbury. Is it love? I think so.
Saw some beautiful meteors, bright with long tails, an iridium flare, then all the usual suspects – Albireo, Mizar, Arcturus, Owl Cluster, Veil Nebula, M81 and 82, Whirlpool galaxy, M13, M24, Lagoon nebula, ring nebula, M6, M7, M4, M22… and more I’m probably not remembering.
Here’s the photos from the night and the mystery of the Gangsta invasion…
