Under the Moon
Dennis Merrill took his place in line to purchase a bus ticket. For the green bills he received a slip of pink with Portland, Oregon emblazoned in bold across the top. The thin pastel bit of paper excited him, and Dennis noticed his symptoms had lessened. His stomach rumbled from hunger instead of sickness for the first time ever. So before boarding the bus, he treated himself to a hot dog from a street vendor then a knish. He’d always wanted to try a knish.
On the bus, he took a seat in the back by a window. The sooty, flaring city rambled past. Two hours later it disappeared. Green filled up the vistas, and buildings grew sparse; as if houses sat in the middle of an enormous park.
Three days rolled by. The moon waxed toward full. Dennis felt better and better. He spent his newfound vigor enjoying bag after bag of a variety of plastic wrapped delights. The cheese puffs became his favorites. He gorged himself on them until all his fingers turned thick with bright orange fake cheese. Licking them and his lips, he fell asleep smiling and sated with his forehead pressed against the cold of the window. He dreamed of the moon, hugging it like a mother, begging it for more. It returned his embrace, seeping inside him, replacing his blood with moonlight. Dennis awoke with a start.
Lunar brilliance streamed in caressing his skin. He shifted his face to drink up the glow. “Ahhhhhh.”
Dennis stripped off his shirt to let more beams touch his flesh. It banished all remnants of his lifelong illness. Out the window, he noted a darker sky than he’d ever seen. Perhaps the bright lights of the city prevented the moon’s radiance from reaching him properly before now. Here it had no hindrance, not one lamp could be seen in any direction he glanced. Then he knew. This was the place.
