OK, The Backworlds‘s birthday was actually in May… still, I’m celebrating. Over the last year, I’ve done things I never imagined when starting this journey — five of my books/stories were published last year, fans send me mail, and my audience grows steadily.
What’s the lesson? Take a deep breath, ignore the nagging insecurities, keep an open mind, and jump.
When I started, I wanted an agent, a traditional publishing contract, all that pomp and circumstance. In the spring of 2011, I changed my mind. I released three free reads that summer, and a novella in the fall of that year. Six months later, The Backworlds was released.
Many of you helped me get the word out, helped me get it to free on Amazon, wrote reviews for me, cheered me on… and I am utterly grateful. Honest and truly.
That was last spring. In the twelve months that followed, I released Stopover at the Backworlds’ Edge, The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear, The Tumbas [in Wandering Weeds anthology], and Boomtown Craze. When I realized that last week, it made my head spin.
“Really?” I said to me.
“Really,” Me answered.
“Wow,” I said.
Since then I’ve sort of handled some not very nice reviews, flippant remarks, a lack of respect by some writers, a fear of sales stopping completely, one book not really selling, frustrations, business setbacks [referred to as incidents].
With all those downs, I’ve also had a lot of ups. My series sells steady and stays steady. My audience grows. I keep writing, and it’s on the verge of supporting itself. Definitely with the next Backworlds book.
So never let a little thing like a bit of insecurity stop you. Don’t take no from yourself or anyone else. Onward and Onward!
That’s how I’m slaying it these days, by looking at from where I started and where I’m at. What about you? How are you slaying it these days?
