Ever meet someone you didn’t want to know who becomes a pain in your behind? Hetty has one of those. She dubbed him Sir Gnat.
The Unintended Friend

Hetty held her chin a little higher walking out of the condo, and she waved at Mrs. Bickles’ shadow. Outside, she headed several blocks out of her way to start her workout. Walking at her briskest pace, her enthusiasm winded her after two blocks, forcing her to slow down and covetously eye a bench in the park ahead. On block three, she veered into the greenery, making a beeline for the rest spot in the shade. Someone beat her to it. When she drew closer, she saw it was someone she knew. Sir Gnat. Shit.
“Morning,” he huffed, scrambling onto his feet and stuffing his hands into his hoodie to ward off the chill. The sun would burn it off within the hour. His smile chased some of the cold away and it crinkled his eyes in an adorable manner. “Great to see you.”
He moved right in front of her. She couldn’t avoid him. Damn.
“Morning,” she said.
His elbow gestured at her Shop Stop uniform. “Off to the salt mines? Or what do they mine for in Oregon?”
Hetty ignored his attempt at cute. She didn’t want to encourage him, since she didn’t return his interest. It seemed a mean thing to do. “Yeah, working in some exercise first.”
Chuckling as if she’d said the most amusing thing, he threw his head back. The bright sun made him sneeze. Gnat pulled the hem of his tee out from the bottom of his sweatshirt and wiped his face.
