When I wrote The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear, I envisioned the end of the book happening in Central Oregon. Since the observatory sits on Highway 20 and I’ve driven that stretch of blacktop a few hundred times, I picked that road for hiding a secret facility.
It’s perfect as it’s quit normal not to see another car for long periods of time. It’s a rather desolate road with a lot of desolate landscape.
Between Bend and Burns there’s a whole lot of nothing and many stories of strange lights, stories of cattle mutilations, and miles of terrain without hint that people and civilization exist.
I wanted a spot past the observatory, so arbitrarily picked Milepost Fifty-three when writing my book. Right before publishing it, I told Husband Unit to hop in the car, that I had to go see what was actually at Milepost Fifty-three.
It turned out to be perfect. There was a whole lot of nothing with a dirt road meandering back into nowhere. It was also government land. So it turned out to be as good as anything I’d invent.
Central Oregon also inspired the setting for Pardeep Station in the Backworlds series. My crit group nitpicked on the lack of people initially on Pardeep and said that wasn’t realistic. I laughed, since they all live here. I asked them if they’d ever been to Riley, a rest stop on Highway 20. After that, they understood what I was going for with Pardeep and ceased to criticize my creation. If you sneeze, you’ll miss Riley.
This is Riley. The Billboard says thanks for visiting. Right before the ‘stop’ is the sign welcoming you to Riley.
As isolated and unpopulated as Central Oregon is, it inspires a lot of fodder for my stories. It may not exist in space, but it exists right here on Earth.
