The end of civilization or the world as we know it is a popular trope in science fiction and fantasy. Officially termed as apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction. These span the gamut of what will do us in from aliens to technology to war to disease to mysterious forces.
Well known movies with this theme are Terminator, Zardoz, and Mad Max. Movies made from books–The Postman, Logan’s Run, War of the Worlds, Planet of the Apes.
Television shows–Battle Star Galactica, Andromeda, several episodes of Dr. Who, V, Falling Skies, Terra Nova, Red Dwarf, Space: Above and Beyond.
Novels and short stories–Outlanders by James Axler, Dark Tower series by Stephen King, Ringworld by Larry Niven, Clay’s Ark by Octavia Butler, Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke, The Last Man by Mary Shelley, Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut, and so on.
What are your favorites? Arthur C. Clarke wrote two of my all-time favorites (which made me a science fiction fan)–The Nine Billion Names of God and Encounter at Dawn. I loved Galapagos by Vonnegut and the Dark Tower series. The Postman is a much better book than movie. Logan’s Run does well in both mediums, but the book has a very different ending. I loved Planet of the Apes and Terminator. BSG would be my favorite on TV so far.
