He spent his whole life sick. Left at an orphanage before old enough to remember, Dennis Merrill recalled only illness and skyscrapers. When very young, he endured a constant weakness and shivered in his skin. Later, when his body made the passage into manhood, his limbs ached and his gut wrenched. He could not stand up straight and when the moon waxed full he felt better; but then he would contract an awful rash, his hair grew extra thick and he would squawk like a bird.
