Seen any good, old science fiction movies lately?
I admit, there are bad points about old movies: ie, endlessly traipsing through scenery, long scenes of watching scantily clad girls swim, watching actors sleep, dwelling extra long on a scene…
But there are things to love and this is what gets me excited about watching each one: we had yet to be in space and were free to imagine endless possibilities, science was no obstacle, and they weren’t afraid to be ridiculously unexpected. Maybe it’s only ridiculous because we know so much more now… mmm… no, not entirely.
I love surprises, especially those that make me laugh. There are a few in Valley of the Dragons.
Valley of the Dragons is ‘loosely’ based on Jules Vernes’ “Off on a Comet.” The story is very relevant and the best part. Two men about to duel, hell-bent on killing each other are suddenly cast into a new world filled with beasts and… dragons! They have to get over their hate and work together to survive in this weird land. If you’re a fan of the original Star Trek, I think you’d like this movie. There were many things about it that reminded me of the original series, ie the two leads losing their shirts. lol
Cheesy as it was, the story is timeless. Husband Unit and I say one beer is enough to have fun watching this movie.
My favorite scenes were when a cavewoman was swept away by oatmeal lava and the flying dragons. We also loved the explanations of how they got to where they were at, because it was really hokey. Husband loved the ending and the fact the dudes didn’t have to try to get their hot chicks. They were making out within 5 minutes. He also really liked the typical Irishman reaction by one of the lead actors, ie, when he punched the biggest caveman in the face for giving him crap.
Valley of the Dragons is part of a genre of movies that scavenges footage from other movies. Yup, this is a genre: movies created around the footage of other movies. Valley of the Dragons is one of the most egregious, taking 60% or better of its footage from other films.
