Poll for Backworlds
Backworlds fans! Book three, Boomtown Craze, is coming along nicely. The plot has gained momentum in my mind, but I’ve been thinking about adding in chapters from other character perspectives in this book. So, instead of the story always filtered through Craze, I’m thinking about adding chapters from Dactyl’s perspective and Talos’s… the rest of the gang, too. What do you think? Would you enjoy reading that?
I have to say that I’m leaning toward yes. This means backtracking and some rewriting.
Marketing This Week
I’m gearing up for the launch of The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear. I made a banner to put at the bottom of all of my blog posts. I’ll have the party announcement on this coming Monday. I’m debating doing some sort of contest involving free books and perhaps some home baked brownies from me. I don’t bake often, so that’s uber special. Thoughts on contests?
My friend is making a trailer for The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear. So yeah, gearing up for Hetty. I’m probably formatting as you read this.
Tonight I have my first in person marketing event. As of the time of writing this post, I have no idea what I’m going to put into the displays I’m going to print. But I have my business cards and a way to set them up. I’ll take a photo tonight, and it’ll be a surprise for all of us.
I’m also the photographer for the event. So, I’ll be sure all the people I photograph get cards. If they want copies of the photos, they’ll need to email me. :)
What I Learned About GooglePlay
Apparently, GooglePlay puts books on sale whenever they want to. So the author loses control over pricing, because Amazon will price match when the author doesn’t want them to. So, I’ll not be uploading to GooglePlay. See, it pays to research and ask.
Look! Tagged by Summer Ross
Summer Ross of My Inner Faerie tagged me last week for the look challenge. The rules: Count up the ‘LOOK’s in your current WIPs and choose your favorite three. Then post the paragraphs around the word.
The Renaissance of Hetty Locklear has 83 looks in it. Really? You have no idea how hard I try not to use that word. I’m just going to publish the first use of look in Ren Hetty. It doesn’t make its debut until chapter two.
The short walk over to the MAX station winded her. The steady poor fare of coffee, donuts, soda, and crap food was taking its toll. “I need a lifestyle change.”
“You mean a diet?” Raspberry’s hazel eyes popped. Her tongue dabbed at her pink lips. “Not today. Today we scream and boogie and stuff our faces with frosting. When are you ever going to graduate again?”
“She could get more degrees.” Maisy held her hand over her eyeglasses to shield them from the paltry rain. “She could graduate again. You should go for your bachelors.”
“There will never be another today. C’mon, Hetty,” Raspberry said.
“Very well.” Hetty didn’t see the point in arguing. It would take more energy than a carafe of coffee could infuse. “Boogie? Really?”
“The bar across the street from the Beanut is having an open mic. You can go over there and kick up your heels. You and Maisy.”
The cousins exchanged a look and laughed.
“Perhaps in an alternate universe,” Hetty said.
Now I’m supposed to tag five people… hmm: Julie Flanders, Holly Sinclair, Catherine Stine, Amanda Rose, and The Writing Nut.
Have a good weekend everybody!

So many questions!
If it would be better through several characters, then go for it. I juggled three points of view for my third book but I think it worked.
Brownies! Yes! Or just books. Whichever is easier.
And be sure to give me a heads up on your release so I can make a big announcement on release day.
As a reader, I’ve found that telling a story through the eyes of several characters is an effective way of introducing facts that the main POV character may not have access to. Of course, it means developing a distinct voice for each character, but that’s small potatoes for someone as talented as you are. Especially when the characters are already developed through dialogue in two previous books.
Hopping from head to head just to “add interest” can backfire as it becomes confusing. Please, not too many POV characters, and each needs to add a unique perspective that could not be attained through your main character.
I’ve found that I need a bit of POV from secondary characters in my own writing to fully tell a story. The times I’ve used 1st person had people asking me about what went on when my character wasn’t there. Made me realize I was missing part of the tale.
Look is such a hard word to work around! Drives me nuts. I end up with too many gaze and glances too.
Have fun at your event!
I’d love to see more POV’s, I love all the characters. :) Thanks for the heads up on Google Play. Let me know when the big release is and I’ll make an announcement as well. Hope the marketing event goes as smoothly as possible tonight.
Thanks for the support during my down time. You rock!
I haven’t had a chance to read Backworlds yet, but generally I like the idea of varied POV. I love how you go out and market your books in different ways. I bet people love buying books from someone they met.
so much info!
thanks for the google play low down!
and love the name raspberry! fun look!
I think the other POVs will add to the story, Alex, which is why I’m leaning that way. It also will lead to developing other stories later. Sounds like juggling POVs becomes part of our writerly growth.
No, I’d not have too many, Doug. Only when they make sense and from the characters whose stories would enhance this story.
All of those crutch words can be tough to work around, Laura. Seems changing POV is winning.
The camera is charging, Melissa, and I did design one poster. Will do another… I think.
Marketing is tough, Tonja. Always feels like you’re yelling into the wind to me. But I love what I do and I believe in what I’ve done.
Yes – to more backstory or info from other characters’ POV.
Good luck rewriting. . . if it is your decision.
Brownies sound like a good prize, mailed from your kitchen? Free ereads are good, as well for contests.
I’ll be back to check.
It would be interesting to hear the story from another character’s point of view, even though I quite like Craze. Maybe not a whole bunch of other POVs in one book, but there will be other books, right? :)
Excellent excerpt. I can’t wait to read Hetty! Only a month away!
It was hard to dig up info on GooglePlay, Tara. Strange.
Yes is still winning, DG. I’m not too far in, so it wouldn’t be too awful to go back and rewrite a few chapters from other character povs. Oh yes, mailed from my kitchen and wrapped up pretty.
Yes, there are other books. Backworlds is open ended, Christine. The majority of the book will still be Craze, but I was thinking this story could use some Talos and Dactyl POV. Most of the characters are kind of unstable, so I wouldn’t spend too much time in their heads. That’d be a ‘crazy’ book. lol
I hope you go with Yes to more POV’s. Your characters are so varied, and from different worlds… I would enjoy getting a peek inside their alien heads. :-D
Hey,
WOW…. how do you keep all this straight in your head!!!
GOOD LUCK with the event tonight and I would say if your writing gut is saying make the changes, well then follow that muse :)
I like books with multiple POV, as long as each voice is distinctive and has a different take on the situation. Go for it, if you think it will strengthen the story.
Ooh, and good luck tonight. :))
I learn from your experience, which I love. I love the banner at the bottom. Good luck with the photos.
Tag! I’m it! Thanks, Mary! Will try to work on this for next week :) Have an awesome weekend.

I don’t think you should switch so far into the trilogy. I have always enjoyed limited perspective stories. Some of the best parts of SciFi are the what if’s that never have answers. This is Craze’s story, I think you should stick with him until its finished.
ooh, what is that pretty flower in the picture? Also, loved the interview w/Stephen Tremp :)
Hope the event goes well! :)
Loved reading an excerpt from your novel.
I think I might, Loretta. Still mulling it over though.
Not sure what the gut is saying this am, Mark. Mostly that Hetty must get done and uploaded today.
The event was fun, LG. Need to take the photos off the camera and see how they came out.
I muddle about, Miranda… :)
Will ‘look’ forward to what you post, Schell.
I’m thinking about it, Bill. The series is open-ended in my mind. So I was thinking other POVs might help keep it fresh.
I’m not sure, MsHatch. They grow everywhere out here in the desert.
Thanks, Eagle.
Thanks for tagging me, Mary! I enjoyed reading your excerpt. :)
I love the title of the upcoming Backworlds book, that’s excellent. I’m sure I would enjoy reading from the other characters’ POV, so if you feel like trying that, I say go for it. Either way I know I’ll love the book.
Hope you had a great time at the event! Looking forward to the Hetty Launch, the banner looks fantastic.
It was great to get a “look” at this book! Sounds very interesting! The banner also looks fabulous! So exciting! :)
Love the photo, M! Also, it sounds like you’re excited about having multiple points-of-view…whenever an author is excited about trying something new, s/he might as well give it a try!
The “look” question was interesting. You sounded as though you had actively tried to avoid the word — true?
