Fiction is the truth inside the lie. ~Stephen King
Today in the lounge of Spacedock 19 is paranormal romance author, Christine Rains. She wrote the fabulous Fearless for the A to Z Challenge last April and recently published it so we can enjoy it again from start to finish. Christine is a fresh and original new voice in fantasy. If you haven’t read her yet, you’re missing out.
Can Craze get you a drink, Christine? I’d still avoid the chocolate for now …
CR: Just a water will be fine, please. I’m not much of a drinker. Chocolate, on the other hand, well, yeah, I’ll keep my hands to myself.
MP: Great. It’s filtered as well as it can be.
The whole realm of the paranormal fascinates me. I watch Ghost Adventures a lot. I love that original episode where a brick is thrown … anyway, I’m sure there’s more to the paranormal genre than ghosts. What makes a story paranormal?
CR: Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters are great shows. I count them as part of my “reality” show watching! A story is paranormal when it has an element of the supernatural, something that can’t be explained by science. Where the seemingly impossible becomes possible. It’s what makes writing in this genre so much fun.
MP: So, it may not necessarily have magic in it?
CR: It does not need magic in it to be paranormal. Magic is a common theme in many paranormal books, but it can be just as extraordinary without it. Psychics and superheroes are great ways to get a paranormal slant without using magic.
MP: Do you have a favorite paranormal creature?
CR: Do I have to pick only one?! All paranormal creatures fascinate me. Okay, I’m going to sound like a stereotype and say vampires. I’ve always loved vamps. Maybe it goes back to the fact my favorite Sesame Street character was The Count. What about you?
MP: I’m partial to ghosts and such. Did you ever read Amityville Horror? Jodi with the pig eyes scared the crap out of me. To this day, whenever I see two red lights together I think of Jodi and his pig eyes. lol Have you ever had a paranormal encounter?
CR: I did read it! Amityville Horror was the first horror movie I saw too. I’ve never had a paranormal encounter even though I would love to have one. Years ago, I owned an Ouija Board that I had bought at a garage sale. My friends and I would blindfold ourselves use it. One person would sit to the side and read the replies. We believed it worked, but I think it’s only because we really wanted it to. Nothing it said ever came true. Which is a good thing because I couldn’t handle having seven kids!
MP: Wow, seven. That’d be a horror unto itself. lol So what are you working on now?
CR: I’m barely surviving one! *laughs* Right now I’m working on a series of paranormal romance novellas called The 13th Floor. Each will be loosely linked together, but the stories will be able to stand on their own.
MP: I’m definitely intrigued and definitely a fan, so I look forward to reading your novellas. Thanks for stopping in, Christine. I hope you’ll come back again in the future. We’ve barely scratched the surface of this topic.
CR: Thank you so much for having me. It’s been so much fun being on the Spacedock. I love talking about the paranormal. I’ve been hearing a few weird noises out here, though. Just normal sounds for this place… right?
MP: Hmm. I heard a rumor there’s a possessed spaceship in dock. Probably just a story though …
Download and read Christine Rains’ fantastic Fearless.
Abby White was seven years old when she killed the monster under her bed. Now she slays creatures spawned by the fertile imaginations of children, and the number of these nightmares are on the rise. Neither she nor her guide – a stuffed hippo named Tawa – know why.
When she rescues Demetrius from an iron prison, he pledges his life to protect hers until he can return the favor. She doesn’t want the help. And how can she concentrate on her job when the gorgeous wild fae throws himself in front of her during every fight? No matter how tempting, she can’t take the time to lose herself to him.
To save the children and all she loves, Abby must be truly Fearless.

Christine’s Fearless rocked!
And Amityville Horror was one of the first horror films I ever saw as well. Go back and watch the original now – you’ll laugh.
Mary, thank you again for having me. I watched The Woman in Black the other night and it was full of creepy kid ghosts!
Alex, thanks! I actually did watch it again a few years ago and snickered a lot.
loved that interview!
the count was the best! go tawa!
I <3 Tawa. The book more than the movie sticks in my mind, Alex. I did see the movie though. Not lately. Bet it is laughable.
Thank you for coming on, Christine. Our chat was a blast.
The Count is rather cute, Tara. Second City TV had a great count, too.
Paranormal is a great way to escape from the mundane. Who doesn’t love a scary ghost or a sexy vampire? Great interview, Mary and Christine.
Great interview. I love that cover. Can’t wait to read it :)
I love your easy couch style of talking with authors. I wish you could do it in person using a video camera from the area near one of the telescopes you frequent. That would be awesome. I should fly out and do that with you, Mary.
And Christine, congratulations on your amazing book! I can’t wait to read it. Just gotta get through a few other books first :)
M, I thought of you *so* much this weekend at a museum I visited …
Christine’s FEARLESS is awesome! And I enjoyed the Amityville Horror movies. I really need to read the book. I think I have it somewhere. Great interview!
Great interview Christine & Mary.
Have you read Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman? There are some paranormal characters in it, too, which are almost like vampires.
Tara, I loved to count with the Count! Did you hear that the voice of the Count recently passed on? :(
Brinda and Anna, thank you!
Michael, I like that idea of Mary doing interviews with the telescope in the background. Thank you! Enjoy.
Cherie, thanks! Just another on your huge TBR list. Hehehe!
Gotta say, that is one fantastic book cover. You wouldn’t think that a stuffed animal could be so… creepy! But the way it is done in monotones, and sort of dark, with the hippo off center and looking right out at you… well done!
Or a sexy ghost, Brinda :)
You’ll love it, Anna.
You should, Michael. We’re only open 3 more weeks. Winter is coming.
I envy your weekend, Suze.
Do not sit in front of a window where cars go by, Cherie. Warning: tail lights look exactly like Jodi pig eyes peering in your window. I screamed so loud my Mom took the book away from me.
I love Neverwhere, Madeleine. I’ve read it more than once, studying how Neil made Mr. Croup and Mr. Van demeer so creepy.
It is a great cover, Loretta, and a great read.
Great interview!
I like reading some paranormal, especially if the author has put a new spin on a trope. Fearless is definitely a unique story. :)
Loretta, thank you! I knew I had to have the hippo on the cover. She has the biggest amount of fans!
TGE, thanks so much!
Fun interview! I’ve always enjoyed watching Ghost Hunters, too!
I’m quite fond of ghost stories as well. I’ve tried to meet one, but have not yet had the pleasure. Great conversation!
Great interview:) I’m a huge fan of paranormal and anything scary really:)
Fearless definitely is, Eagle. I loved it.
I just watched the newest, Sherry. Jodi pig eyes … I’d be moving.
I had one ghost experience, Michael. It was so unexpected. Strange more than scary.
The paranormal is fun, Tania.
I just love that cover with the teddy bear!
I’m a big Ghost Hunters Fan. It was awesome interviewing them a few months back for Culturebrats.com. They were very nice.
I watch Ghost Adventures when I need to laugh. I think the Zack guy is funny – so melodramatic.
I was absent from the A-Z challenge so I just downloaded Fearless now. Nice interview too!
Typically, not a paranormal fan but I will check out Fearless. :)
Sherry, a bunch of us Ghost Hunters fans here! :)
Michael, I’ve tried to have experiences too. No luck. I’ve even been to Gettysburg and had no luck seeing ghosts.
Tania, thanks! Can’t wait to read your next scary story.
Jay, I’m excited you got to meet the Ghost Hunters! I agree with you about Zack.
Southpaw, awesome! Hope you enjoy it.
Libby, thank you! :)
Great interview! I enjoy paranormal, particularly things like ghost stories. Good luck, Christine, and thanks for hosting, Mary!
I already have my copy and can’t WAIT to read it.
Cool, Jay. The ghost shows are fun. It’d be neat to meet them. I like melodrama, especially when they scream. :)
Lucky you get to read Fearless for the first time, Southpaw.
I think you’ll like it, Libby.
I like the ghosts, too, Shallee.
I look forward to reading it again, Ciara.
Thanks for joining me in the Spacedock, Christine.
I love this interview! I enjoyed visiting the Spacedock :D
I am intrigued and love paranormal….
Ah, the OUIJA board…some of my stuff came true! I am happy yours didn’t~
Seven would zap your sanity and your writing would suffer! I look forward to learning more~
Well Done you two!
Shallee, thank you!
Ciara, hope you enjoy it!
Ella, thanks! I have enough trouble finding time to write with one kid. I think I had a screw loose as a teen wanting that many kids. *LOL*
Mary, it’s been a blast!
Nice site. I’m jealous. Save the ferrets!!
Highly descriptive blog, I liked that a lot. Will there be a part 2?
