Martian Snow

*

No astronomy report today. Besides rainy and cold all weekend, my telescope is in repair, and I’m nursing a sick cat. Spent the weekend in knots of worry and at the vet. If my cats aren’t happy, neither am I.

No major repair to the telescope. The base of it broke. I fixed it temporarily to use it Saturday before, but brought it home for the Husband Unit to fix more permanently. Of course, as I said, we were preoccupied with a sick darling this weekend.

Did you hear about Martian snow? http://news.yahoo.com/mars-snowflakes-tiny-red-blood-cells-162342554.html Apparently, the size and kind of dust has an impact on whether it can snow and what the snow will look like.

In sci-fi news, Falling Skies returns to TNT on Sunday nights. Season 2 started off with a bang. Noah Wylie returned from his time with the aliens. Cue Twilight Zone music … It gives me my alien fix. Yay aliens.

Since I was home all weekend, Husband Unit and I finished watching Torchwood IV. I love this show. I hope there will be a season 5. All’s I know is, one shouldn’t work with Jack and Gwen. I know some griped that the show was Americanized or something. Shrug. It still surprised me, which is what I love most about Torchwood.

About half way through season 1 of Game of Thrones, too. Makes me want to start reading book 2, but I have so many books ahead of it. Siiigh.

On someone else’s blog … can’t remember who … they recommended watching the documentary Dear Zachary on Netflix. I have to second that recommendation. It started out being about a man who was murdered, then became something else, at least twice during the film. It was surprising and gripping, and if you write about crime at all, I think you should see it. That said, have a box of tissues handy when viewing. If you’re not moved by the film, have your pulse checked. At any rate, I keep thinking about the story and the people in it.

Well, I’m back at the vet today. I hope to come out intact … have to get the IV thingy out of her leg. Anyway, still nursing my poor cat. I think if she hadn’t of been poked so much, she’d be much better than she is. Siiigh.

  1. I’m sorry! Hope your kitty is better soon.

  2. I’m so sorry about your kitty! I hope she’s feeling better soon. I’m the same way with mine – totally distracted.
I read the sample portion of Game of Thrones and got bored with it…

  3. I hope your cat feels better soon!

  4. Thanks Alex, Laura, and Summer. I hope she is, too. She’s acting a bit more like herself today, but she’s still not eating which worries me. She doesn’t weigh more than 8 pounds soaking wet.

Whatever my decisions at the vet today, we need to get through it without sedatives. I hope they can give her fluids w/o it today then take the IV thing out.

  5. Mary, I hope the kitty feels better and you can take the IV out. So far Falling Skies is pretty good. The new writer is doing good work.

  6. Oh, poor kitty. That is so hard. I hope you kitty is doing better by the time you read this.

I haven’t heard of “Falling Skies”. I’ll have to see if I can find season 1.

  7. I hope your cat is better soon!

Thanks for the link about Martian snow–I’m off to check that out.

  8. Yes, Maurice, I think Falling Skies is pretty good. Sad that there isn’t much sci-fi on any more.

I’m sure you can find it somewhere for free Southpaw.

I thought it was an interesting article, Eagle.

Kitty update: Well, back from the vet. Another emotional wringer of a day for me. I didn’t want any more drugs, but my hell cat reared her head despite not showing so much spunk at home. So they had to sedate her to take the IV catheter out. They gave her some pain meds, because I think that’s her main issue right now … because of all the stuff they did to her on Saturday. They also gave her the injected hydration instead of IV [would have been more sedatives]. Then I found liquid food and got a syringe from them in case she’s still not eating later. She weighs a bit under 8 pounds on a heavy day and is currently under 6. That’s what worries me most. We’re sitting here staring at each other.

  9. Oh no! Is that Makayla or Nini? It sounds like she has been through the wringer. I hope whichever it is, she feels better fast and starts eating again.
My kitties never turn down tuna juice. :-)

  10. It’s my poor little Nini, Loretta. My cats usually don’t turn down tuna juice either, but so far only Makayla is enjoying the treats.

The smartest thing I did yesterday besides telling them to hydrate her was ask for a syringe. Husband unit squirted a little liquid senior nutrient I found at the pet store yesterday. Later I squirted some water in her mouth and she finally drank water on her own. So, hopefully we’ll turn a corner today. Please!

  11. Interesting article on Martian Snow, Mary, thanks for sharing that. I wonder how they manage to measure such small particles from orbit.

I’m enjoying Falling Skies too. Haven’t seen Torchwood since it disappeared from Hulu, miss that one. Marie had a crush on Capn Jack; did you know he’s a really good singer and has several records out?

Hope the kitty gets to feeling better soon. Critters seem to bounce back from things faster than we do. Hope that’s true for you in this case.
