Very cool article Mary! I will stop drinking goat’s milk now. We have been manipulating genes in humans and animals since the beginning, and plants. Now I would worry when they start mixing the three. On second thought, maybe coco beans +cows=chocolate milk. Now that I could go for!

I had no idea it was so hard to get spider silk. That's what I call "Weird science!"

It would be similar to the pasteurization process to harvest the spider silk, Stephanie. So, the goats aren't spinning webs. I wonder if bugs would get stuck on spider alfalfa.

Fascinating. It's cliche, but truth is stranger than fiction. I cannot begin to understand how spider silk in goat's milk can be 'harvested?' Alfalfa, maybe. But the uses certainly make it a worthwhile endeavor.

It's quite amazing, Tonja. I'm interested in where they'll go next.

Yes, the spider silk gene was first successfully added to mammal DNA back then, Matthias.

Ick. Great if they can make medical advances, but it's still icky. None of these scientists saw 'The Fly' or 'Jurassic Park'?

We've manipulated genes for millennia developing livestock and crops. This is just using different technology. It's what we humans do, manipulate our world.

I can see many practical applications in humans, Stuart. Making us healthier, for one.

Wasn't there a spidy pig on The Simpsons? There's two companions for Spiderman, Allan.

The Tumbas, The Backworld Series and The Hetty Locklear Series all use gene manipulation as science behind the story.

Gene splicing/manipulation is an element of many of my favorite stories; some of the things they come up with are pretty amazing. Perhaps the most memorable, though, (at the moment anyway) comes from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy: Restaurant At the End of the Universe and the cow that is bred to talk customers into eating it; "...perhaps a nice steak off of my rump?"

Horror films use this a lot, but I don't care for horror - I prefer to be able to sleep at night.

So... Spiderman might end up with a goat as a pet/companion? MMmmmmm... I'm not seeing that. :-)

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this concept, Mary.

just kinda wow and bizarre. Let's hope they stop at the goats and don't try to make a real Spiderman or woman.
